The Many Faces of Hun Ajaw and Yax Balam

Justin Kerr
(Independent Scholar and Creator of the Maya Vase Database)

The Hero Twins of Popol Vuh fame have numerous faces. This survey will illustrate many of them. The Twins are the ultimate magicians, transforming into other deities and aspects of those deities. They lead a complex existence and the artists of the ancient Maya took advantage of this complexity to record their many adventures. Our sources will be abundant painted and carved vessels where we can see the diversity of styles that were used to portray their many faces.
