DIVINE KINGSHIP: THE POLITICAL IDEOLOGY OF PRE-COLUMBIAN RULERS

On September 17, the Pre-Columbian Society of Washington, D.C. invites you to explore with us the important connections between the sacred and political manifestations of rulership across the ancient pre-Columbian world.  Scholars who specialize in the ideology of rulership will assess the applicability of divine kingship and will examine how rulers used this concept to legitimate their authority.  Speakers include the following scholars: Brian Bauer, University of Illinois at Chicago (Inca); Luis Jaime Castillo, Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (Moche); Lori Boornazian Diel, Texas Christian University (Aztec); Patrick Hajovsky, Southwestern University (Aztec); Takeshi Inomata, University of Arizona (Maya), and Simon Martin, University of Pennsylvania (Maya).
